What is the challenge in the healthcare

Improving the quality of the health care system is among one of the prevailing challenges that United States. The health care system plays a major role in the society because the lives of the people depend on it. Improvement in the standard quality of health care as well as increase in medical knowledge enables people to live a fuller lives (Bernanke, 2008). Health care involves the prevention and treatment of ailments as well as the preservation of mental and physical well-being through services offered by the health and medical profession (The Free Dictionary, 2004). The quality of health care is a very significant aspect which affects the country scientifically, socially and economically. Health care is not only confined to the prevention and treatment of sickness but it also covers the health care organizations and associations. Lack of health care access is among one of the many challenges that the health care reform must address. As of 2006, studies show that almost forty seven million Americans or sixteen percent of the population lacks insurance which means to say that they get less health care attention than those people with insurance thereby causing their health to suffer. It is a well-known fact that the quality of medical technology and research in the United States is very high, however, the highest level of effectiveness may only be achieved if there is information dissemination and consistencies in policy implementation(Bernanke, 2008). Since the quality of health care is a global concern, then the answer to the problem should be apt to encompass global barriers. Countries from around the globe should gather to surpass economic and political barriers and unite to form a strategic plan in order to overcome and address this problem.

My Last Duchess and La Belle Dame Sans Merci Comparison Essay

My Last Duchess and La Belle Dame Sans Merci are two poems that explore a wide range of power dynamics that result from love. Patriarchal power is a key theme that is explored in these two poems, with conflicting views on each. La Belle Dame sans Merci tells of a sorry tale of how a knight, a typically powerful figure, is cast away by a woman who had no love for him. This theme is almost mirrored in the other poem; however the other poem, My Last Duchess seems to exert a more male perspective, focusing more on patriarchal power. A women to Her Lover, seems to be a blend of the two poetic styles of the previous two poems, as it both states the various patriarchal powers, and then proceeds to tear down these beliefs, and also tear down the conventions which were typically seen as the norm of the day. The title of the poem is typically an indicator of what to expect from the poem, and in what vein it will be written. My Last Duchess is no exception as it immediately gives the reader a sense that the narrator, The Duke, see’s his late wife as a possession. He refers to her with the possessive pronoun ‘My’ to try, it appears; to regain a certain degree of control over her. This wanting of control is further explored when he says that ‘The curtain I have drawn for you,’ which portrays the sense that he feels he is the one who is giving others the right to see his wife. During the Renaissance (a period which Browning based his characters society as) was a time that was largely seen as patriarchal, and so the duke would typically want to conform to this norm. Furthermore, it may be this possessiveness that leads to his jealousy when she is seen as accepting a ‘bough of cherries’ from someone who he regarded as an ‘officious fool’. He also felt that she had a heart which was ‘too soon made glad’ and that it wasn’t only her ‘husband’s presence’ that she appeared to crave. These lines seem to be the Duke commenting on how her rather flirtatious and outgoing nature, not typical of women in that period, displeased him greatly. Furthermore, it seemed that he wanted her to end this affiliation with the other people, and this gave rise to the suspicion that he killed her, to end the constant barrage of seeming embarrassment and discomfort from his wife’s various exploits. In those days there were always certain classed that would always be prejudiced against. Therefore, this incidence could have been regarded as his wife trying to exert some egalitarian power, by making the ‘officious fool’ feel like an equal, and also by riding round on a ‘white mule’, something which was often seen as a past time of the poor, as they could not afford to buy a proper horse. This form of power did not seem to go down well within the constraints of the love relationship. The duke seemed particularly afraid of this form of power as he proceeded to mention the fact that he thought that she felt that she ‘ranked’ his ‘nine-hundred year old name’ with anyone’s ‘gift’. This shows that he feels that the social classes should stand as they are. This is quite ironic, as this is set in the Renaissance period where it was said that people were becoming more scientific and were ready to embrace new ideas. Thi s is at odds with what actually happens in the poem, with the man defecting to the typical view of women being ‘slaves’ to the men, but during a very socially obligated period. As well as this, the poem also manages to explore the power of love itself. This is shown with the infatuation of the widowed husband over the picture, as is demonstrated when the Duke believe that there is ‘depth’ in the painting, and that the women portrayed in the painting still holds some ‘passion’ for him. This could either be the power of the love, or, in fact, the power of the painting. This could, however, represent the actual mentality of the Duke, as he falls in ‘love’ with a painting of a woman who is deceased. This displays the underlying power of the love that had blossomed between these two individuals, and how the power of the painting was so influential that up to this point (in the poem), he still feels the attraction of the painting. However, this is at odds with what he says later on in the poem, written using enjambment to make it a more conversational style, when he talks about how he ‘tamed’ her, and rather uncharacteristically he uses a metaphor, perhaps to inject some frivolity into the proceeding so as to avert any fear of being caught. However, he also mention ‘I gave commands’, perhaps referring to getting her killed, and then he goes on to say that ‘all smiles stopped together’. This form of power could also be regarded as patriarchal power or perhaps more accurately as sheer male strength over the opposite gender. The poetic techniques used are also pivotal to understanding what types of power are being explored. A key feature used in the poem is the iambic pentameter, which is a meter typically associated with a more male poem, due to the stressed single syllable at the end of a line. This is often attributed to the fiercer and fierier poems, which are to be said with an earnest, thus it being seen as a more masculine form of rhyme. As well as this enjambment is used, meaning that all of the lines follow on from each other, giving the poem a more conversational tone. This is quite odd, as the Duke himself comes across as a very contrite kind of person, but this could be due to the Duke trying to appear more powerful in his own home, or estate, meaning hierarchal power is something that is quite high up on his agenda, probably because he feels that hierarchal power is the only way he could have got this relationship. Overall, this poem is mainly based on patriarchal power, and despite the fact that it does include a few instances of other forms of power, such as egalitarian power, patriarchal power seems to take an overbearing role. It is written from the perspective of someone very high up on the social ladder, and thus would include references to this form of power, inherited, or hierarchal power. La Belle Dame sans Merci on the other hand is a poem which almost admits to a person of rather high importance, the knight, being led astray by a woman. This poem is set in the medieval period. Various power dynamics are explored throughout the poem, mainly the various struggles between the desire of the man, and the simple want of pleasure for the woman. The atmosphere is largely controlled by the weather displayed in the poem. This poem first begins by thinking of the power of nature and how this seems to coincide with the mood of the narrator, creating a pathetic fallacy. He is described by the visitor as ‘alone’ and ‘palely loitering’, and to add to the rather sombre starting, the atmosphere is seen as in the winter, where the ‘sedge’ has ‘withered’ away ‘from the lake’. This displays how the rather somber natural world seems to effect on his recovery from his painful loss of his girl. The weather seems to dampen his spirits and this is almost confirmed when it says that ‘no birds sing’, or that there is no sign of happiness. This power is quite strong as it is unavoidable, and can have an effect on his love for the woman as he may ponder on the relationship more. However, this is only one power dynamic that may have an effect on his love for the woman, and his overall love outlook. This power is far less prominent in ‘My Last Duchess’ with the atmosphere merely created through the dramatic monologue. Also, the main atmosphere is created through the ranting of the Duke. A woman’s power over a man is not often accredited, however it is brought to light in this poem with the woman who he (the knight) see’s as a ‘faery’s child’, or in essence a woman with an abundance of beauty. This power of the woman over him may have resulted in him becoming quite ‘haggard’ and ‘woe-begone’ meaning his gradual degrading of state, because of his insistence that ‘she did love’ him, even though he believes she does, although she never explicitly stated those words, and this is backed up later in the poem when he admits she said it in a ‘strange’ ‘language’, which he believed said that she ‘love[d]’ him, even though it was quite plain to see that she did not in fact love him, but was there to be pleasured. This shows that the woman used her power to manipulate what was the result. However, another power that is used to some extent, is matriarchal power, on a more philosophical sense, as the knight imagines the lady wearing a ‘garland’ that could be seen as him trying to believe that the ‘sacred’ woman is still angelic, however, this is contradicted when he describes her as ‘wild’ and that he could only ‘shut her eyes with kisses four’. This shows that he had such an infatuation with his prospective wife that he looked past these slight niggles, as he was blinded by the power of love, which is essentially what under lied all of the events that occurred in the whole poem. The first poem on the other hand instead looks at the woman as someone who should be at the hand of the man to answer to his every need, not someone who should be able to have fun when she wants, and in this poem the woman is allowed to freely go, whereas in the first poem, she comes to an arguably, sinister end. Furthermore, in ‘My Last Duchess’ the woman is not given much power except those that come with the name, and of course her egalitarian power. Apart from this, ‘My Last Duchess’ has few similarities with this poem with regards to the way women are treated; aside from the fact that the knight believes she should be obedient to him. Strangely, it seemed that hierarchal power was of not much importance to the two, as despite the promise of power, the woman still left him ‘alone and palely loitering’. This was also unconventional, rather like most of the events that occurred in this narrative, where the woman didn’t jump at the option of gaining some power, but instead just left him. It seems that the woman was just there for the power of the promise of being made love to, but not hierarchal power. Instead this poem seems to focus only on the aspects of love, unlike the first poem which makes sure that the reader is aware of the hierarchal integrity that is needed. This is at odds with ‘My Last Duchess’ which focuses heavily on how the status brings power to the family, and it is essentially this that makes the Duke so incensed by the bad behavior of his wife. However, this poem doesn’t use the masculine pentameter, instead it has the last two syllables unstressed, which gives the impression of having a much softer, and morose feel to the poem, which is quite suited to the overall theme of the poem. This is in stark contrast to the more conversational, but still fiercer style of the first poem. Conclusively, the power dynamics explored in the first poem are far more diverse, and it appears that there are much more powerful components involved in the rather complex relationship, and it showed the power of the relationship that the man was ready to kill, or silence his wife. This is contrary to the second poem where the knight seems to be rather constrained and polite at all times, and in this case it is the woman who has control over the man, unlike the trends of the time. Overall, the power dynamics behind love in the first poem varies greatly; largely going down to hierarchal power, but the second poem is a relationship of courtly love, which is not based on true unabated love. The third poem is a strange mix of the previous two poems, with both patriarchal and matriarchal poems being discussed. A woman to her lover offers a refreshing insight into the inner workings of a woman’s mind. It begins by listing all the conventions, particularly how males usually dominate society. She openly attacks these conventions, by saying that if he wants to ‘make of [her] a bond slave’ then she simply ‘refuse[s]’ him. This is quite odd, as the poem was written at a time, when everything that she is trying to repress was actually the norm of the day, so it is seen as quite unconventional that a woman is being able to exert so much power of a man, by actively refusing to follow the current conventions of the time. This matriarchal power trying to quell the patriarchal power is evident. This is in stark contrast to ‘My Last Duchess’, where the main forms of power explored are those which are typically more to do with patriarchal powers, in a male dominated society. For example, the Duke feels that she should respect his ‘name’. However, this poem does bear some resemblance to the second poem, in the way that both seem to respect that women do have some power over men, however limited and unconventional it may be. However, this poem is largely egalitarian power, as it largely displays how men and women should be treated as equals, and this is demonstrated when she pleads to her lover, that she wants to be treated as a ‘comrade’, and a ‘friend’. This shows that this woman firmly believed that she was in an equal position to the man, and, despite it being said otherwise in the unwritten law of the land; the woman feels that she should be at the same level as the man. The narrator uses phrases such as ‘o husband’, and ‘I am yours forever’ to try and show that she has submitted to him, and to try and restore some order, with the male again being the more dominant one. This is surprisingly similar to ‘My Last Duchess’ as both women in the poems try to make them equal with the opposite gender, seemingly oblivious to the opposite gender. Another key aspect of this poem is the way in which it is written, such as organization, and poetic techniques. Firstly, it is written using enjambment, creating a more conversational style to the poem. This means that the woman does not appear to be dominating too much, and is, as a result, courting him on equal terms, emphasizing the fact that she feels that it should be a ‘level playing field’ for them. It is also quite clever in the way it manages to make the things that it is trying to crack down on come first and then it brings them down by saying what she would actually like. This is clever because it sticks in the person’s mind, and creates a stronger argument. The technique of enjambment is similar to the first poem, where it manages to create a conversational style so as to appear to converse with the other messenger, while realistically the Duke isn’t very sociable. However, none of these literary techniques are echoed in the second poem, La Belle Dame Sans Merci, which is probably due to the problem of both being written in completely different styles, with one being a more sorrowful poem, and the other being a more commanding and endearing poem. Conclusively, the three poems all share a variety of power dynamics that are all explored. The most common theme was that of which gender was more dominant and which gender was controlled. This was mostly explored in ‘My Last Duchess’ and ‘A woman to her lover’. Inevitably this led on to the topic of equality, and it is in this way that egalitarian power was brought to light. Even ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ explored how the woman and the man were both equal as they could both enter and leave the relationship as they did please. However, poetic techniques were used to further enhance the message of the poem; with all the poems using a different poetic technique to enhance and improve it’s delivery of different love and power dynamics. In the end, the power of love seemed to encompass all the poems, as all three showed how love took control of the.

Cultural Theory And Popular Culture - 1578 Words

PART TWO After reading chapters 1 through 4 of Cultural Theory and Popular Culture, my understanding of the core ideas presented by John Storey begin with his attempt to map â€Å"out the general conceptual landscape of popular culture† (Storey, pg. 1). He does this by breaking down the term â€Å"popular culture† with other surrounding key terms. I know that popular culture cannot be easily defined or explained, since it is â€Å"a melting pot of confused and contradictory meanings capable of misdirecting inquiry up any number of theoretical blind alley† (Storey, pg. 1) as Tony Bennett states. In order for me to grasp the idea behind popular culture, I must look at culture as a whole by formulating what I think are the core ideas presented in each†¦show more content†¦Upon further reflection, I came to believe Storey’s claim as I see my favourite genre of music, â€Å"hip-hop,† which is a form of popular culture, as a site of rebellion and criticism of the dominant ideology within capitalist society. For the most part, hip-hop has been requested and watered down in terms of lyrics by mainstream society. However, in its earlier years, many of the rappers were vilified for the highly confrontational and political statements in their music. What I do know about this reading is that, despite popular culture’s counter-hegemonic capabilities, it all too frequently plays a role of democratic propaganda. As a reader, I am able explore the landscape of popular culture where I can analyze with my own theories and explanations through the observations of other theorists and their ideologies regarding what popular culture means. I also agree with Karl Marx’s formulation of ideology and society in which he suggests, â€Å"the way a society organizes the means of its economic production will have a determining effect on the type of culture that society produces or makes possible† (Storey, pg. 4). This statemen t was evident in the documentary I watched in class, â€Å"Soul Food Junkies† (Hurt, 2012), which explores how the conditions of black people shaped the ideologies that eventually became their cultural identity. This is also relevant in chapter 2 that focuses on powerful minorities and the hegemonic attempts â€Å"to

Strategic Information Security for Norwood Systems †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Strategic Information Security for Norwood Systems. Answer: Introduction Information is the most important asset of an organization. In this era of information and communication technology, security threats and risks are becoming a major concern for the organizations (Andress 2014). Information security deals with the protection of the integrity, availability as well as confidentiality of the sensitive and valuable information of a company. Norwood Systems is known for providing telecommunication services to enterprises, consumers and carriers across the world (Norwoodsystems.com 2017). This report discusses the security programs that can be adopted by Norwood Systems for improving its current security structure. This report discusses about the concept of information security and provides suggestion regarding the types of security models that can be implemented for the betterment of the organization. It identifies the security threats and risk assessment plans and programs that can be adopted. This report also provides the requirement for training plans and the suitable ISO standards as well as models for Norwood Systems. Literature on Information Security Information security deals with protecting systems as well as information from any type of unauthorized or illegal access, modification, destruction as well as disclosure. The main objective of information security is to maintain integrity, availability and confidentiality of information (Peltier 2016). Confidentiality deals with protecting or securing the valuable information from any type of unethical or unauthorized access. Confidentiality makes sure that only authorized users can access the right information as per their needs. Integrity deals with protecting valuable information from any type of unauthorized destruction and modification. Integrity makes sure that the information is complete, uncorrupted and accurate. Availability deals with providing correct information in a timely manner without any obstruction or interference. Information system consists of various components like software, hardware, people, data, procedures and networks (Ciampa 2012). All these components are vulnerable to various risks and threats. Information security is an important need of every organization. Several strategies can be used for protecting the information against any kind of attacks. Risks can be avoided and mitigated to promote a secure business environment (Vacca 2013). Loss of valuable information can harm several users and also affect the company reputation. Information security is gaining importance with time. There are several information security models that can be incorporated in the business processes of an organization based on certain needs and requirements. Current Security Situation and Titles of the Security Personnel Norwood Systems are responsible for providing telecommunication services of high quality. The Enterprise Solution makes the use of cloud services for making the communication platform of the corporate world very effective. They have a strong security policy in the organization. Several security personnel are present in an organization. Each of them has an unique role and responsibility. Some of them are as follows: Chief Information Security Officer: CISO is the head of the security department and responsible for the overall management of the security department. Security Engineer: A security engineer is responsible for monitoring the security needs of the organization. A security engineer makes proper utilization of advanced technologies for enhancing the security capabilities of the company. Security Analyst: They are responsible for analyzing and assessing several vulnerabilities in the IT infrastructure of the company. Systems Administrator: They are responsible for installing and managing security systems across the entire organization. Risk Assessment and Threat Identification Risk assessment is required for developing strong security policies in an organization. Real risks and threats are identified along with their level of exposure and probability of occurrence (Peltier 2013). Risk assessment can be done by following certain procedures and steps. In the NIST framework of risk management, assumption of risk, risk constraint, tolerance as well as priorities are identified. The company goals, business processes, mission, information security architecture and SDLC processes are integrated for proper assessment of risk. The threats and vulnerabilities existing in the organization are identified. After the identification is done, the company finds out various ways to respond to the risks and selects the most suitable option. The last component is to monitor the risks and to bring about change in the information system of the organization due to the impact of risks. ENISA framework can be used by Norwood Systems in order to assess the risks that are related to the cloud service that is provided to the enterprises for effective communication. In ENISA, risks are identified then analyzed followed by evaluation process. Security threats are a major concern of Norwood Systems. Telecommunication industries are vulnerable to several threats. The network equipments as well as the switching infrastructure can be accessed in an unauthorized manner. This can lead to tampering and illegal tapping of network traffic. The voice traffic can be intercepted because there is no encryption in case of speech channels. Mobile stations can be modified for exploiting the weaknesses in message authentication (Mayer et al. 2013). This can cause spoofing where the attacker pretends to be someone else in order to gain access to sensitive information. The base stations can also be modified for enticing users for getting attached to it (Jafarnia-Jahromi et al. 2012). The lawful mechanism of interception can be misused. Backdoor attack can take place that observes the activity of the user and misuses the data. Denial of Service attack can use the resources of the network by sending unwanted network traffic to the target syst em. Cloud services that are provided by Norwood Systems are vulnerable to certain threats like data breach, insecure interface, malicious insiders, account hijacking, issues regarding shared technologies and DoS. The deliberate threats are more dangerous and have high exposure because the attacker has malicious intentions behind such attacks (Ross 2014). Categorizing and ranking the threats will be helpful for the organization to promote a secured work culture and environment. Security Models The security models can be considered as standards that can be used for comparison or reference. The NIST access control model is used for identifying the access mechanism of the various levels in Norwood Systems. The management level accesses the data and information related to strategic planning (Chang, Kuo and Ramachandran 2016). The administrative level controls the operational data and the technical level accesses the daily information that is required for continuity of business. The security models help to implement information security in the organization. These models can be incorporated in the hardware, software as well as policies of the organization. Norwood Systems provide enterprise solution via cloud services called Corona Cloud (Malik and Nazir 2012). NIST Security models will be extremely beneficial for the company. NIST documents are freely available and have been updated by the government as well. It provides guidelines regarding risk assessments, privacy controls and security plans (Hamlen et al. 2012). Norwood Systems need to implement strong security policies for protecting the cloud against any kinds of threats (Youssef 2012). Development of Security Program Norwood Systems is a medium sized company and has a hierarchical organizational structure. Code of conduct prevails in the organizational culture. The employees are expected to act honestly and protect the assets of the company. The employees can release confidential information with the permission of the company. The company takes serious action if there is breach of conduct. Strong security program needs to be developed for protecting the company against security threats and risks. Failure to protect valuable information will harm the reputation of the company. The key components of the security program that needs to be developed are as follows: Hire a DSO or Designated Security Officer: DSO is required for monitoring and coordinating the security policies of the organization. Risk Assessment: The Company must identify the types of information that it stores along with the value of the information. Identification of risks and threats that is associated with different category of information needs to be done. The threats and risks must be ranked according to its level of exposure and effect. Access control: The security officer must decide which information must be available to whom. The employees must be authorized to access the type of information that is needed by them to run the business and depending upon their roles and levels in the organizational structure. Individual account: All the employees must have a separate account so that it can be monitored properly and it will also help to investigate any data loss or manipulation. Develop policies: Information security policies must be developed so that the entire organization is aware of the security expectations. The importance of information must be mentioned in the policies. These policies must be reviewed as well as updated every year. The employees must sign agreement to follow the rules and policies. Effective governance: The security officer must make sure that the policies are being followed in an effective manner. The roles and responsibilities of the employees must be clearly defined so that the operations are carried out in an effective manner (Siponen, Mahmood and Pahnila 2014). Install firewalls: Firewalls can be implemented to protect the internal network from any external malicious attack. A hardware firewall can be used between the internal network and Internet (Hu, Ahn and Kulkarni 2012). The firewall must be installed with antivirus software. Software firewall needs to be installed in all the computer systems. The firewall must be updated. It must be purchased from an authentic vendor. Secure wireless access points: The administrative password of the device must be changed. The wireless access points should be set in such a manner that does not broadcast its SSID. The router must be set to use WPA-2 along with AES or Advanced Encryption Standard. Web filters: The security officer must set email filters so that it can filter out malicious emails. Use of web filters will help Norwood Systems to detect any malicious website and prevent from accessing the malicious website. Encryption: The information of the system must be protected by encryption technique. Other specialized roles can include virus technician who will identify new viruses and develop defense mechanisms against them, intrusion detector who will monitor the networks and systems to identify how the intrusion occurred. Source code manager can review source codes to detect vulnerabilities. Distinguishing all the security related roles and functions can be helpful in improving the information security of the firm. Training Requirements Security awareness plays a critical role in the implementation of the new security program. There must be a balanced trust across the organization so that information is shared in a secured and effective manner (Hu et al. 2012). The higher authorities must play a significant role in demonstrating the need for security programs in the organization. The employees must be given proper training so that they understand the security policies in a correct manner. The employees should know to utilize the organizational resources in an efficient way. They must be given training so that they can tackle any type of security incident. Monthly meetings must be set up to discuss about various security issues and measures to overcome such issues. Cooperation of the employees is needed in order to promote information security in the organization. ISO Standards and Models ISO model is the most used security model in the industry. This standard was developed for providing a common base to the organizations for the purpose of developing security standards (Disterer 2013). This helped in developing inter organizational deals. ISO/IEC 27001: This provides information regarding the implementation plan of ISO/IEC 27002 for the purpose of setting up ISMS or Information Security Management System. ISO/IEC 27002: This addresses controls of information security. A firm can use this standard to address their security needs and develop security policies. This model is suitable for Norwood Systems as it will help the organization to develop a management system that will manage information security. Norwood Systems provides Enterprise Solutions with the help of Corona Cloud. The ENISA security model will also be suitable for the cloud security of the organization (Pearson 2013). This model will help the firm to assess the risks related to cloud computing. This model will also provide an assurance framework for the cloud computing services. Sports Mascots free essay sample

The controversy over sports mascots is nothing new in today’s society. From the early 1960’s it has created an immense campaign against stereotypical sport mascot names. In articles, Indian Mascots—You’re Out, and So Sioux Me each author demonstrates how many people including Native Americans perceive certain mascots to be offensive. The authors’ first goals are to raise attention to this topic by creating pathos in their writing. Although Mark Hyman, author of So Sioux Me, has many good examples and facts, Jack Shakely, author of Indian Mascots – You’re Out, has a more credible argument. He implements pathos by describing a story that happen to him at a young age and also establishes credibility early in his article, which proves to the reader he understands the topic he is writing about. By creating emotional and logical appeals and establishing credibility, Shakely is successful and writes a persuasive and interesting article. We will write a custom essay sample on Sports Mascots or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In order to be successful with his argument Shakely must gain his readers’ attention so he creates an emotional appeal in his first and second paragraphs. Shakely begins stating how in the early 1950s when he brought home a Cleveland Indians hat back home in Oklahoma. His mother was â€Å"fighting against Indian stereotypes all her life† when she ripped the hat off his head, tore it up and threw it in the garbage (646). His mother ripping his hat creates an emotional appeal for the readers and also shows how strongly some people disagree about having Indian mascots in sports today. Additionally, Shakely creates a logical appeal describing the Braves’ mascot in the 1970’s: â€Å"It was that cringe-worthy Chief Noc-A-Homa who came stomping and war-dancing his way out of a tepee in center field every time the Braves his a home run that got to me (647).† He creates a picture demonstrating that its not the Braves name that is stereotyping Native Americans, it’s the actions of the mascots that are being offensive. Colleges and universities such as Dartmouth College, changes their school mascots’ name in the 1960’s from the Indians to the Big Green so they wouldn’t offend anyone and it created uproar with their alumni that wanted to keep the original name. The last way for Shakely’s argument to be effective, he needs to prove to his readers how he is credible enough to be writing about this topic. Skakely does this by explaining how his friend of his â€Å"was president of Stanford at the time. He said the university lost millions of alumni dollars in the short run, but it  was the right thing to do.† (647) This demonstrates how he is credible because he must be a successful person and knows first handed how changing a teams’ mascot name can effect a university because a good friend of his is or was Stanford University’s president at the time. By Shakely effectively proving to his readers that he is credible, he earns their trust and the readers are more likely to agree and take his side with the topic. In the articles, Indian Mascots—You’re Out, and So Sioux Me both authors illustrate to the readers many different persuasive writing techniques. Many of these techniques include using pathos, logos, and establishing some sort of credibility. Jack Shakely, the author of Indian Mascots—You’re Out, does the best job using these techniques and writes a more persuasive article. The readers are first reeled into the topic with the pathos in the beginning of the article and at the end Shakely shows how he is credible.
